Wells, Austin

Austin Wells (Dayton/Oakwood) enjoyed a memorable career for the men’s golf team from 2014-18, winning four-straight Ohio Athletic Conference championships and making ensuing NCAA appearances each spring.

Wells flirted with All-American honors as a sophomore when he finished 27th at the national event, just a few weeks after his team won the OAC’s by a staggering 41 strokes. He turned in some of his best performances at conference events, finishing top-10 every year to claim All-OAC honors after places of eighth, sixth, fifth and sixth again.

Wells would save his best outing for last, delivering an exclamation mark to his college career by finishing third out of 217 participants at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, N.C. He was the 36-hole leader and ultimately ended the week two-under par, just one shot back of the eventual medalist. Wells was later voted a second team PING All-American as a result of his standout senior year, in which he posted a 73.3 stroke average and helped the team finish 13th collectively at nationals.

Wells was Otterbein’s low scorer at NCAA’s in three of the four years, and his third-place finish is the second-best individual result in program history.
