Roger dominated the high hurdles both in-state and nationally while a member of the Otterbein track and field team from 1973 to 1976. He was NCAA Division III outdoor national champion and All- America in the 120-yard high hurdles three times (1974- 76), and OAC champion four times. Roger received the Giesman Award, given to the most outstanding track athlete in the OAC, in 1975 and 1976. As a senior, he participated in the Meet of Champions held in Berkeley, Calif. Roger still holds the second fastest time in the hurdles, 14.0 seconds, at Otterbein. Upon graduation from Otterbein, he enrolled in The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, graduating in 1980. He set up a private practice in Westerville. Roger and his wife, Marian, are actively involved in church and other Christian activities, including the Kairos Prison Ministry.
