Smith, Jim
Over his four years as a member of the track and field team at Otterbein, Jim Smith established himself as one of the best all-around athletes to wear the tan and cardinal. He holds the school record in the decathlon, the grueling 10-event competition that includes technique events such as pole vault, hurdles and high jump; strength events like shot put and discus; speed events such as the 100 meters and ends with an endurance race in the 1500 meters. Smith is the only Otterbein athlete to earn All-American honors in the decathlon, finishing sixth at the NCAA meet in 1984. He also currently sits tenth on the alltime list for pole vault at Otterbein and won the Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault title in 1983. Jim has gone on to be an outstanding teacher and coach at Hilliard Davidson High School.
