For more than three decades, few individuals did more to tell the story of Otterbein athletics than Ed Syguda. Serving as the University's Sports Information Director from 1984 through 2016, Syguda became one of the most respected and influential athletic communicators in NCAA Division III, dedicating his career to promoting Otterbein student-athletes, coaches, and programs with professionalism, integrity, and passion.
Upon arriving at Otterbein in 1984, Syguda built and maintained media relations for the University's athletic programs, serving as the primary liaison between the Cardinals and local, regional, and national media. During his tenure, he oversaw publications, statistics, communications, and publicity efforts while helping elevate the visibility of Otterbein athletics throughout Ohio and beyond. His work ensured that countless student-athletes received recognition for their accomplishments and that Otterbein maintained a strong presence in the highly competitive central Ohio sports landscape.
A gifted storyteller and photographer, Syguda documented generations of Cardinal memories, providing the vast majority of athletic photography used by the University while preserving the history and traditions of Otterbein sports. Colleagues praised his unwavering commitment to excellence, his strong relationships with media members, and his genuine care for the student-athletes whose achievements he chronicled.
Syguda's contributions extended beyond campus. He earned 23 publication awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and played a key role in the historic 1992 Rhine River Classic, the first collegiate football game played in Germany. His distinguished career was recognized nationally in 2016 when he received the CoSIDA Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first member of the Ohio Athletic Conference to earn the honor. In 2016, he received the OAC Bill Nichols Media Award, which is presented annually to a sports information professional or member of the media for outstanding contributions to collegiate athletics communications. In recognition of his years of dedicated service to the university, he was later named an Otterbein Emeriti Faculty and Staff member in 2020.
Perhaps most importantly, Syguda viewed his work through the lens of student development. He often cited the opportunity to watch young men and women grow during their college years as the most rewarding aspect of his career. Through his dedication, professionalism, and tireless advocacy for Otterbein athletics, Ed Syguda left an enduring mark on the University and helped shape the experiences of generations of Cardinals.
His 36 years of service to Otterbein, 32 as the Sports Information Director, stand as a testament to a career devoted to celebrating student-athletes and preserving the rich history of Cardinal athletics.
