Richard Franklin (Dick) Fishbaugh, or “Coach Fish” as he was known to those whose lives he touched most, joined Otterbein College’s Physical Education Department in 1966 and was named baseball coach. In the 33 seasons that followed, Coach Fishbaugh led the baseball team to 624 wins, six NCAA Division III appearances, numerous Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) tournaments, the National Championship game in 1983 and Otterbein’s first OAC baseball championship in 1989.
In recognition of these achievements, he was twice named the OAC Coach of the Year; his nickname “Fish” appeared on the back of all Otterbein baseball caps; and on October 17, 2004, the baseball complex was named in his honor. In addition to what he accomplished while at Otterbein, Coach Fishbaugh was inducted into the OSHAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Pickerington High School Hall of Fame.
