At Otterbein, Fred was a letterman in football and baseball, and also played basketball for two years. He was named the Jump King in 1948 and earned the Norris-Elliot Award for Academics- Athletics in 1951. After graduating from Otterbein in 1951, Fred coached high school football in Bellville and Bryan, Ohio, prior to being named head football coach at Ashland College, now Ashland University, in 1959. He remained in the position for 34 years, and also served as professor and chair of physical education and athletic director at Ashland University. Since retiring in 1998, Fred has been involved in improving Ashland’s football, soccer and track facilities, serving as co-chair of a successful $25 million campaign. His induction into the Otterbein Hall of Fame is his seventh such honor, including the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002 and Ashland University Hall of Fame in 1994.
