Doug McCombs certainly made the most of his Otterbein career, exceling in both athletic and academic ventures. His most notable athletic achievements came on the football field, as the offensive guard earned All-American honors in 1980.

An All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) selection in both 1979 and 1980, the Galion native earned a reputation as one of the premier linemen in the conference. A four-year letterman and three-year starter, he was named as the captain of the 1980 team. However, McCombs didn’t excel solely in football as he was also a four-year letterman on the track team. In 1979, he won the OAC shotput title.

In addition to success in the athletic arena, McCombs also stood out in the classroom. He was named to the CoSIDA All-District Four Academic All-America team for his 3.39 GPA. McCombs concluded his career by being awarded the Augspurger-Ballenger Award, presented annually to Otterbein’s outstanding athlete.
