Collins, Matt
Worthington native Matt Collins turned in a notable playing career for Otterbein men’s golf, capturing All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) honors three times in four years. A methodical grinder on the golf course, Collins possessed a great short game and relied on his strong iron play.
Matt waited patiently as a freshman before cracking the lineup by his sophomore season. From there, he finished sixth, fourth, and eighth respectively at the OAC Championships in helping Otterbein remain the dominant team in the league. His fourth-place finish in 2006 was a true test of perseverance as he rebounded from an opening-round 79 to shoot a three-under 69 on the second and final day. The 69 remains the second-lowest 18-hole score in OAC Championship history. Otterbein finished sixth at the NCAA Championships that spring, and Matt later received third-team PING All-American honors.
Another one of Matt’s standout moments also came during his junior season while on the team’s spring break trip. Coaches, teammates, and especially his playing partners that day will never forget the 29 that he shot on the front nine during the Jekyll Island Tournament.
